Some benefits of having your large photographs scanned

Many old, large photographs are not looked at from one year to the next but having a digital copy available enables you to display the image in a photo book, computer screensaver or digital photo frame. You could even have a favourite memory printed to stretched canvas prints, mobile phone cases, cushions, mugs or shopping bags.

Digital images can quickly be shared with family and friends by ordering an extra disc, or online.

With so many people interested nowadays in their family history, notes could be made regarding the people in the large photographs or where they were taken so that this information is not lost to future generations.

Placing an order

If you have a pretty good idea of how many large photos you wish to have scanned, the best way to place an order would be to select your level of large photo scanning service above and click, 'Order now'. If you order this way, you'll be able to pay up front by debit/credit card, whenever you wish. There's no need to wait until we're open for the day.

If you have a large collection of large photos you would like scanning, and don't want to count them all, just give PiciScan a call on (01539) 741461, or email us and we can arrange everything for you. Once all your large photos have been scanned, we'll prepare an invoice and you can pay by debit/credit card over the phone. Or, if you like, you can pay by direct transfer using telephone or internet banking.

Getting your large photos to us

The safety and security of your memories is our topmost priority. For this reason, we recommend our Home Collection Service as the safest way of getting your large photos to us. The service costs just £25.99, or is FREE when the cost of your order, before this charge is applied, is more than £150. Due to the larger size of these prints, we wouldn't be able to send you out a Jiffy bag prior to collection: you'd have to prepare them for collection yourself. The advantage with this being, you don't need to wait for the arrival of our packaging material before having them collected, which in some cases, couls be on the same day you get in touch with us.

If you'd prefer to send your large photos yourself, then we would recommend Royal Mail Special Delivery.

Alternatively, if you live close by, you can pop your large photos to be scanned into PiciScan yourself. You'd be most welcome! Just ring first to make certain that someone is going to be here at the time you visit.

How your large photos will be scanned

To make sure your large photos are safe and scanned to the best quality, at PiciScan, we only use a Brother MFC 6490CW scanner to scan them. Your large photos are gently held on a flat surface, and never come into contact with any moving parts, meaning they can never jam inside a machine. Having your large photos scanned on a flatbed scanner is the safest possible way to have your large photos digitised.

To ensure you see as much of your memories as possible, we scan an area larger than the image on the large photo itself. These larger scans are then cropped and properly rotated, before being colour corrected and finally copied to a personalised disc.

How your scanned large photos will be labelled

Your large photo scans will normally be labelled consecutively, from '0001' onwards. If you would like your large photo scans to be labelled starting from a different number, to fit your own archiving system for example, just let us know. For a small extra cost, you can also have your large photo scans labelled individually.

Have each large photo scan labelled with non-consecutive numbers for just 25p each. Or, have us label each large photo scan with the title of your choice for just 99p per large photo scan. Should you require this service, just let us know at the time of your order and we will send you across an invoice when the re-labelling is complete.

You may wish to have your large photos scanned into different folders onto the disc. Perhaps you have a large number of large photos and wish for them to be scanned into seperate named folders for each year that they were taken? No problem. Provided that there are at least 24 large photo scans to go in each folder, there will be no extra charge. Any smaller groupings will be charged at 25p per folder label, and we will simply invoice you on completion of your order.

How your large photos and disc will be returned to you

Once your large photos have all been scanned and your disc(s) prepared, we will contact you by email to let you know that your order is ready for return delivery. Return delivery to the UK is free on all large photo scanning orders over £100 and is via APC, a secure courier service. Because orders will normally have to be signed for, we will only return your scanned large photos and discs after first finding out from you when a convenient day would be.

Alternatively, you may wish for your large photos and disc delivered to you by Royal Mail Special Delivery. Prices for this service start at £11.50.

Limitations of service

Our large photo scanning service is brilliant at rescuing old, forgotten memories and returning faded colours to ancient large photos. But sadly, even we can't rescue an out of focus image, or correct blur caused by camera shake. What we can do, is provide you with the best results with the image that is present.

Occasionally, older large photos can become ripped or severely bent. If this is the case, we will not repair the large photos before scanning them as this can lead to further, unintentional damage. They will be held together as best they can be and scanned as they are. For best results, you may wish to take advantage of our photo restoration service. Just let us know and we will invoice you for any work once it has been completed.

Problems with your large photo scans?

It is our aim that you should be completely satisfied with your large photo scanning order. In the event that we have fallen below the high standard of service you would expect from PiciScan, just let us know and we will see what we can do. There may be things we can do to fix the problems without your having to return the large photos for re-scanning as we will keep your scans on our system for two months after returning your large photos to you. Failing that there is always the backup of your order which will be available indefinitely.

Should you have to return your large photos for re-scanning we will re-imburse you the cost of sending them to us. We will also carry out most work, and return your large photos and new disc completely free. Please see our Returns Policy for more information.

Box Sizing: Border-Box

Posted: 24 March 2016

I first came across box-sizing: border-box when it cropped up in a temporary colleague's CSS. I found it pretty annoying when I picked up work that he'd started as it seemed to get in the way. This was because, as I said in a previous post on margin ...
