Some benefits of having your medium format negatives or transparencies scanned

It is difficult to tell what is on a negative so making use of our medium format scanning service provides you with a quick and easy way to see what memories you might have forgotten you had.

Many old transparencies are not looked at from one year to the next but, having a digital copy available enables you to display the images in a photo book, computer screensaver or digital photo frame. You could even have a favourite memory printed to stretched canvas prints, mobile phone cases, cushions, mugs or shopping bags.

Digital images can quickly be shared with family and friends by ordering an extra disc, or online.

With so many people interested nowadays in their family history, notes could be made regarding the people in the negatives or where they were taken so that this information is not lost to future generations.

Placing an order

If you have a pretty good idea of how many medium format transparencies and/or negatives you wish to have scanned, the best way to place an order would be to select your level of medium format scanning service above and click, 'Order now'. If you decide to use our medium format scanning service this way, you'll be able to pay up front by debit/credit card, whenever you wish. There's no need to wait until we're open for the day.

If you have a large collection of medium format transparencies or negatives you would like scanning, and don't want to count them all, just give PiciScan a call on (01539) 741461, or email us and we can arrange everything for you. Once all your medium format transparencies or negatives have been scanned, we'll prepare an invoice and you can pay for our service by debit/credit card over the phone. Or, if you like, you can pay by direct transfer using telephone or internet banking.

Getting your medium format transparencies and/or negatives to us

The safety and security of your memories is our topmost priority. For this reason, we recommend our Home Collection Service as the safest way of getting your photos to us. The service costs just £25.99, or is FREE when the cost of your order, before this charge is applied, is more than £150.

If you'd prefer to send your photos yourself, then we would recommend Royal Mail Special Delivery.

Alternatively, if you live close by, you can pop your transparencies or negatives to be scanned into PiciScan yourself. You'd be most welcome! Just ring first to make certain that someone is going to be here at the time you want to visit us.

How your transparencies and negatives will be scanned

To make sure your medium format transparencies or negatives are safe and scanned to the best quality, at PiciScan, we only use Epson Perfection V700 Photo scanners to scan them. The video above demonstrates how we use them to scan your medium format transparencies or negatives. They are gently held on a flat surface, and never come into contact with any moving parts, meaning they can never jam inside a machine. Having your medium format transparencies or negatives scanned on a flatbed scanner is the safest possible way to have them digitised.

To ensure you see as much of your memories as possible, we scan an area larger than the image on the transparency or negative itself. These larger scans are then cropped and properly rotated, before being colour corrected and finally copied to a personalised disc.

How your scanned medium format transparencies or negatives will be labelled

Your medium format scans will normally be labelled consecutively, from '0001' onwards. If you would like your medium format scans to be labelled starting from a different number, to fit your own archiving system for example, just let us know. For a small extra cost, you can also have your medium format scans labelled individually.

Have each medium format scan labelled with non-consecutive numbers for just 25p each. Or, have us label each photo-scan with the title of your choice for just 99p per photo-scan. Should you require this service, just let us know at the time of your order and we will send you across an invoice when the re-labelling is complete.

You may wish to have your medium formats scanned into different folders onto the disc. Perhaps you have a large number of negative or transparencies and wish them to be scanned into seperate named folders for each year that they were taken? No problem. Provided that there are at least 24 medium format transparencies or negatives to go in each folder, there will be no extra charge. Any smaller groupings will be charged at 25p per folder label, and we will simply invoice you on completion of your order.

How your transparencies or negatives and disc will be returned to you

Once your medium format transparencies or negatives have all been scanned and your disc(s) prepared, we will contact you by email to let you know that your order is ready for return delivery. Our scanning services all include free return delivery to the UK where the cost of the order exceeds £100 and is via APC, a secure courier service. Because orders will normally have to be signed for, we will only return your scanned photos and discs after first finding out from you when a convenient day would be.

Alternatively, you may wish for your medium format transparencies or negatives and disc delivered to you by Royal Mail Special Delivery. Prices for this service start at £10.80.

Limitations of service

Our medium format scanning service is brilliant at rescuing old, forgotten memories and returning faded colours to ancient transparencies. But sadly, even we can't rescue an out of focus image, or correct blur caused by camera shake. What we can do, is provide you with the best results with the image that is present.

Occasionally, older transparencies or negatives can have mildew growing on them, particularly if they have been kept in damp conditions. If this is the case, we will, with your permission, attempt to clean them with special photographic cleaning solution. You should be aware that this can sometimes lead to the image on the transparency or negative becoming damaged. For best results, you may wish to take advantage of our photo restoration service. Just let us know and we will invoice you for any work once it has been completed.

Also, older transparencies can become separated from their mounts. If this happens, we will have to repair the transparencies before they can be scanned. They will carefully be remounted in their original frames, for a small charge of 25p per repaired transparency. Once all your transparencies that need it have been repaired, we will simply send you across an invoice by email which you can pay by debit/credit card over the phone.

Problems with your medium format transparency or negative scans?

It is our aim that you should be completely satisfied with our medium format scanning service. In the event that we have fallen below the high standard of service you would expect from PiciScan, just let us know and we will see what we can do. There may be things we can do to fix the problems without your having to return the transparencies or negatives for re-scanning as we will keep your scans on our system for two months after returning them to you. Failing that there is always the backup of your order which will be available indefinitely.

Should you have to return your transparencies or negatives for re-scanning we will re-imburse you the cost of sending them to us. We will also carry out most work, and return your transparencies/negatives and new disc completely free. Please see our Returns Policy for more information.

Box Sizing: Border-Box

Posted: 24 March 2016

I first came across box-sizing: border-box when it cropped up in a temporary colleague's CSS. I found it pretty annoying when I picked up work that he'd started as it seemed to get in the way. This was because, as I said in a previous post on margin ...
